ESPANOL SENORA HAGLUND
COURSE OVERVIEW: The central goal this year is COMMUNICATION in the Spanish language. We will work on fluency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Spanish. Also, we will explore Spanish-speaking cultures and make comparisons with our own.
Hartland High School Responsibility Protocol
Hartland High School has an expectation that students will take responsibility for their own learning. Communicating with teachers is key to student success. If an issue or question arises pertaining to a particular class, the student should first talk to the teacher in an attempt to resolve it. If the student feels further discussion is needed, he/she should make an appointment with their counselor. It is important for students to follow this protocol. If a parent feels that further discussion is needed, the teacher should be contacted.
MATERIALS: Bring the following to class each day: pen, binder or folder to hold worksheets (1 inch), notebook, 3X5 note cards
GRADING: Students please make sure to acquire a personal Zangle login and password so it is easy check the grade earned in this class. Grading will be determined by the total points earned in the following categories:
Daily Board Work: 3 points each for daily board work. Students are responsible for completing the assignment independently. These are collected about 10 at a time, not each day. Students must not lose them.
Flashcards: Students are required to make flashcards of the vocabulary with each lesson. Each flashcard must have the student's initials in the lower right corner in ink. Vocabulary should be reviewed each night! (I cannot stress this enough.)
Homework: Late work not accepted. The unspoken assignment each night is to review vocabulary.
Quizzes: UNANNOUNCED quizzes will be given frequently about twice per week. They are unannounced because it is more important to assess what the student has learned, rather than what he/she memorized for the quiz. This is why students must review vocabulary each night. Quizzes will be multiple choice, matching, translation, etc...Vocab quizzes may include vocabulary from any of the previous lists.
Tests: At the completion of a unit, the student will complete a test to assess what he/she has learned. The tests will follow the format of the class activities and encompass all vocabulary learned. Tests will be announced.
Projects/oral assessments/writing/etc...other assignments will be given in addition to the ones above.

ATTENDANCE is the most important thing in this class. A lot of work will be done together as a class, and while there are some ways to make up the work, it is not the same as the actual classroom experience. It is difficult to create an oral question/answer session for make up work. The attendance policy in the student handbook will be followed. It is the student's responsibility to find out what work is missed. The procedures for doing this have been discussed in class. Field trips and school related events will not be encouraged if a student has had multiple absences and/or has earned a D or E.
BASIC CLASSROOM RULES: -Be respectful. Be on time. Be prepared. Be active.
CELL PHONE POLICY: The school cell phone policy will be enforced. Cell phones should be turned off and not visible. Emergency calls can be directed to the front office at 810-626-2200.
IPODS: I do not permit IPOD use in my classroom. Other teachers may permit them. Please have the headphones out of your ears when class begins.
DISCIPLINE: Discipline is dealt with individually and fairly. First, I try to remedy a situation with the student. I seek appropriate support from the parents, counselors, administration if necessary.
EXPECTATIONS: ALWAYS HIGH. I command high expectations at all times. All work should be neat and complete. I will not include “neatness, no plagiarizing, complete, creativity, etc...” with each assignment. These general expectations are to be thought of with each assignment. Teachers always want to see that students put effort, or extra effort, into an assignment—even when not asked.
USE OF A TRANSLATOR: Students may use a translator to look up one or a few vocabulary words. It is our desire that students use the Spanish they know. We do not expect them to know more. Sometimes, this is limiting in how students can yet express themselves. We need to assess what they truly know and a translator does not help us accomplish this. We can almost always spot when a student has used a translator because the verbs/tenses/vocab is far advanced and often incorrect. If a student chooses this route, a zero will be earned.
COMMUNICATION: Your student will be provided with all of the necessary elements for success each day in class. I realize that parents appreciate communication on assignments, vocabulary, etc... Please see the attached sheet about a blog that you may access throughout the year which should help you help your student.
Please sign the attached page after you have read it. Thank you for your attention.
