2012 Syllabus Spanish I and II Honors

ESPANOL SENORA HAGLUND

COURSE OVERVIEW: The central goal this year is COMMUNICATION in the Spanish language. We will work on fluency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Spanish. Also, we will explore Spanish-speaking cultures and make comparisons with our own.

Hartland High School Responsibility Protocol

Hartland High School has an expectation that students will take responsibility for their own learning. Communicating with teachers is key to student success. If an issue or question arises pertaining to a particular class, the student should first talk to the teacher in an attempt to resolve it. If the student feels further discussion is needed, he/she should make an appointment with their counselor. It is important for students to follow this protocol. If a parent feels that further discussion is needed, the teacher should be contacted.

MATERIALS: Bring the following to class each day: pen, binder or folder to hold worksheets (1 inch), notebook, 3X5 note cards

GRADING: Students please make sure to acquire a personal Zangle login and password so it is easy check the grade earned in this class. Grading will be determined by the total points earned in the following categories:

Daily Board Work: 3 points each for daily board work. Students are responsible for completing the assignment independently. These are collected about 10 at a time, not each day. Students must not lose them.

Projects: Most of the graded work in this class will be in the form of projects. This class will be different than others because every assignment will not be graded. We will work toward a final project for each unit. These projects are the bulk of the student’s grade.

Flashcards: Students are required to make flashcards of the vocabulary with each lesson. Vocabulary should be reviewed each night! (I cannot stress this enough.)

Homework: Very, very little homework is given. Late work not accepted. The unspoken assignment each night is to review vocabulary.

Quizzes: UNANNOUNCED quizzes will be given at the teacher’s discretion. They are unannounced because it is more important to assess what the student has learned, rather than what he/she memorized for the quiz. This is why students must review vocabulary each night. Quizzes will be multiple choice, matching, translation, etc...

ATTENDANCE- Please reference the HHS Student Handbook.

BASIC CLASSROOM RULES: -Be respectful. Be on time. Be prepared. Be active.

CELL PHONE POLICY: The school cell phone policy will be enforced. Cell phones should be turned off and not visible. Emergency calls can be directed to the front office at 810-626-2200. I may, at times, use cell phones for certain class assignments. I will also allow phones to be used for calendars and reminders.

IPODS: I do not want ear buds in the students’ ears during class-even if the ipod is not on. If we are doing silent work, or working individually on a project, I may give permission for ipods to be used. Repeated reminders to take ear buds out will result in a referral to the office.

DISCIPLINE: Discipline is dealt with individually and fairly. First, I try to remedy a situation with the student. I seek appropriate support from the parents, counselors, administration if necessary.

EXPECTATIONS: ALWAYS HIGH. I command high expectations at all times. All work should be neat and complete. I will not include “neatness, no plagiarizing, complete, creativity, etc...” with each assignment. These general expectations are to be thought of with each assignment. Teachers always want to see that students put effort, or extra effort, into an assignment—even when not asked.

USE OF A TRANSLATOR: Students may use a translator to look up one or a few vocabulary words. It is our desire that students use the Spanish they know. We do not expect them to know more. Sometimes, this is limiting in how students can yet express themselves. We need to assess what they truly know and a translator does not help us accomplish this. We can almost always spot when a student has used a translator because the verbs/tenses/vocab is far advanced and often incorrect. If a student chooses this route, a zero will be earned.

COMMUNICATION: Your student will be provided with all of the necessary elements for success each day in class. I realize that parents and students appreciate extra communication on assignments, vocabulary, etc... Students are not required to use a twitter or Facebook account for assignments. They may email or handwrite any Twitter assignments. Please use the following for communication/class information. You can access my basic syllabus for your review on my blog*:
